Well this is my niece/daughter's first week of school. The first day was crucial for me and her. We have both been needing a change and school has not come at a more perfect time.
Saniya loves everything about school. I can't keep her away from it. I see this as a great thing simply because her biological mom/my sister had a very hard time adjusting to school and never liked it and this ultimately lead to her not finishing school.
So right now it's one point for Saniya and zero for a struggle later on down the road. I see this as a great chance to open her eyes. I have to make sure that she does everything that I would want me son to do; for example GOING TO COLLEGE.
Genetics are not on my niece's side seeing as both her parents are high school dropouts. So I'm praying and trying to make sure that she can get everything in life that she wants to dream for. So for me, the fact that my niece can come home and tell me that she likes to ride the bus home from school, and that she hopes her bus driver, whom she calls by name, can drive her to see me while she's riding the bus.
The only drawback that I'm seeing is that my niece loves to follow rather than lead and I see this as a huge potential problem being as children learn more from other peers their age than parents. I really don't want her to fall into the wrong crowd and I am making sure that she gets all the healthy social connections that she can get without making her feel alienated.
It's already hard enough that she's may have already realized that her living situation is weird, that she really doesn't live with her actual mom and that she's calling her aunt mommy. So as I gradually introduce her to the idea of her special family I hope that it won't damager her emotionally and ruin her progress.
